Towards the end of the last post I wrote on how having a common purpose is what actually drives the friendship in our marriages.
So what kind of purpose is there behind marriage? And what do the overall mission of our marriages look like?
We get to narrow down our focus and hone in on what we believe as a couple to determine what it is that breathes life into our marriages to make them alive and healthy.
What is Marriage For?
“It is for helping each other to become our future glory-selves, the new creations that God will eventually make us.” – Tim Keller
The Great Horizon
“Christian friendship at the heart of a marriage relationship can lift it to a level that no other vision for marriage approaches”
It is getting a glimpse of what God is doing in the other person. it is about believing what God wants to do through them and partnering along with in the process with Him. Through God Himself and by the power of Jesus, we get to partner along to see who God is creating them to be. The process of it at times can be long and painful, but that is what we have chosen to be in for. For the long haul.
It is saying “I can see the flaws and the imperfections and weaknesses but underlying them all I see and believe the person who God wants you to be.” We are learning how to have the eyes of Jesus and how to see the other already as spotless and blameless. We are learning how to love the other with their imperfections and giving them the space and grace to grown into their truest identity in Christ.
By knowing their truest identity in Christ, we make a commitment as their spouse to their holiness and to what is beautiful about them in the sight of God. This is the “giving of self” that Jesus demonstrates on the cross to make us beautiful and perfect all for the glory of God.
Marriage has been designed to make us holy. No wonder it can be painful at times. We live with seeing our imperfections and weaknesses. However thank God doesn’t stop there. We get to live through them and grow out of them by God’s grace and mercy to experience all that God has for us in Christ. We can to experience who God has created us to be and anything short of that will leave us dissatisfied. By having a life partner in marriage who makes that kind of commitment to one another is truly heart transforming.
Application
Married Couples: Write down the words that come to mind when you think about who you believe God is creating your spouse to be. Pray those words around your spouse and ask God to bless them and to assure them of their identity in Christ.
Engaged Couples: Write down the person who you see your future spouse becoming. If you were to think of your spouse in the next ten years, who do you see them as? Do you get excited for that person? Do you get excited to see them become that person? Start praying for your spouse in those ways.
