Memorial day was once known as Decorative Day. The federal holiday originated after the American Civil war to commemorate the Union soldiers that were lost in the war.
The first time Memorial day was celebrated it was described by David Blight:
This was the first Memorial Day. African Americans invented Memorial Day in Charleston, South Carolina. What you have there is black Americans recently freed from slavery announcing to the world with their flowers, their feet, and their songs what the War had been about. What they basically were creating was the Independence Day of a Second American Revolution.
Watch the flags today. In the beginning of the day the flag will slowly be brought down half way till noon to demonstrate the remembrance for all the people who have died serving our country. After noon the flag will be raised to display the living soldiers and that their sacrifice wasn’t in vain. The raised flag is to give us remembrance to continue the fight for “liberty and justice”.
Thank you soldiers for serving our country!
Thank you wives and husbands of soldiers for serving our country. Your support for your spouse does not go unrecognized.
Thank you sons and daughters of soldiers for serving our country.
I am blessed to be a United States citizen. I appreciate the soldiers serving our country.
I am thankful for:
– my freedom in voicing my faith in Jesus as my Lord and savior
– the right to vote
– the freedom and voice I have as a woman or person in general
– and the many other freedoms I don’t realize
Thank You
