Educating the masses on Mandarin

For months now my husband and I have sometimes said xie(4)xie (4) when thanking a person in China. In those occassions sometimes the locals would smile and laugh. I would take this response and think, “Oh….the Chinese people are really friendly happy people.” Well today I learned this extra fourth tone “xie(4)xie(4)  means diarrhea.

I still think the Chinese are altogether a friendly culture. Maybe not while driving, but that’s another story.

So thank you for reading this post and becoming a little bit more educated on Mandarin. I also pray that you are not currently loosing your bowels today.

Have you ever said a word in another language that was similar to another word? If so, please leave a comment in the box below to warn future travelers in far away lands.
