“Out here, you find out that the city fools you about how things really work.”
Quote from The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Another Utopia…
Does our government look out for our best interest or theirs? What ugly lies do we believe to be true in our society? From a year of living abroad in China and now returning to the States I have eyes that analyze the cultural differences. Some things culturally are just different, but then there are ideas factually healthier depending on how willing you are to researching the issue. Scott Westerfeld does an excellent job designing a Hansel and Gretel breadcrumb trail of what he thinks of our societies ideology in his first book in the series The Uglies.
The synopsis of the book from wikipedia:
The Parallels in The Uglies
I was recommended to read this book from a friend. It is a young adult series that reminds me of the Hunger Games. It was an easy fast read and because the ideas in this book were so thought provoking it was a page turner. I highly endorse this read to anyone looking to be inspired to think unconventional and be inspired to live against the mainstream. The first book has a strong commentary voice about societies: psychology, government and environment. The author makes the reader examine their thinking of how they come to believe what is beauty. If you like to be a non-conformist this book will feed your mind. If you like to follow the norm than this book will challenge your way of thinking. The story reflects the fragility of humanity with nature. This book might paint an extreme picture of society but I think it’s an accurate depiction to the person that analyzes truths (a Smokie) and a person that takes information without examination (a Pretty).
Questions for You Readers:
Do you think what society teaches us in always true and in our best interest?
If not, do you take the time to research what is best and true for your well being?
What excuses get in the way? And at what cost does that excuse come at?
If you have read the book, what message did you get?
