We get a special inside look on the love birds. They have answered five questions for us, and we have documented them right here throughout the blog.

The first question we asked Matthew and Annie, “When is your wedding anniversary date and where did you get married?”

“June 15th, we share our anniversary with my grandparents who were a huge influence on me and were a wonderful example of a Godly marriage. We were married at the Barn at Power Ranch. It was simple, fun and perfect!”

Thanks to Harley Ann Chapman for her hair and make-up, Annie’s soft and loose curls creates an effortless feel. Especially with her kindred red golden locks. Annie reminds me of my favorite fictional character, Anne of Green Gables.

First looks always leave the best impressions on our hearts.

We were dying to know just how Matthew popped the question to Annie and so we asked Annie herself. This is her version:

“Matthew and I spent the entirety of our dating relationship in separate states (physically, not psychologically). I was coming home for Christmas break and knew that he would be proposing soon. I’m a bit of a super sleuth and had figured out that he would be popping the question sometime during the winter holidays. Matthew picked me up from the airport with flowers (like always) and told me that some of our friends were at the Riparian Reserve by the Gilbert Library and asked if I would like to go star gaze with them. I thought it sounded fun, besides, I was already dressed super cute and very awake which was not typical after a long flight. Normally I would say no due to being tired or cranky after traveling but lucky for him I was all in. When we arrived at the reserve Matthew told me that our friends were at the gazebo and were having a prayer meeting (That sneaky man was trying to account for the lack of sounds as there was nobody actually there). As we rounded the corner and the gazebo came into full view, my eyes took in the whole scene, a bajillion lit candles, a zillion rose petals, the night sky peaking through the roof slats. He drew me into the middle, got down on one knee and said a lot of things neither or us remember. I said yes, we kissed, it was magical. “

A hand in hand walk that they will always remember. They sure are naturals at loving and walking through life together.

We asked Matthew, “What do you love about your spouse?”

“Annie is the most empathetic and compassionate person I know. She cares more for others, especially children, than she does herself. Whenever someone she knows needs cheering up, or needs help of some kind, she drops everything to do what she can.”

They make loving each other easy. Laughter and light-heartedness keeps their heart full for one another.

Annie was asked, “What do you love most about your partner?” and she responded:

“I love how much fun Matthew is. He knows how to make me laugh but most of all he knows how to make it interesting. He doesn’t try to conform to the world’s standards of normality or success, instead he finds things he is truly passionate about and learns as much as possible about it. Matthew can tell you all you need to know about building with natural materials or how to make an archery bow out of nothing more than a bit of PVC piping, some string and fire. Due to these, along with other very handy skills, Matthew is my best chance to make it out of the zombie apocalypse alive and that’s not something to overlook when looking for a life partner.”

They have something deeper and foundational in their marriage that is apparent in the way they treat each other, and this is totally apparent in their photos together.

Each spouse was asked, “What God has taught you in your marriage?” from their own perspective:

Matthew: “Marriage isn’t about being in love, but choosing to love no matter what. Nothing can change my decision to love Annie and care for her because I’ve chosen to do so. I don’t love her because I want to, although I do, but I love her because I’ve chosen to. It’s a commitment, not a feeling that can change. And that commitment makes the feeling harder to be changed.”

Annie: “I never have to worry if we are going to get divorced. I know no one goes into marriage thinking they are going to get divorced but in this day an age everyone always has it at the back of their mind as an option if this doesn’t work out. But it’s not that way with us. Matthew is committed to me as I am to him. God is the center of our decision to devote ourselves to each other. We made a choice to love each other even when the butterflies go away. If God stopped loving us when we became unlovable, we’d be in some pretty sticky situations but since God won’t forsake us, we take that as our example of how to love each other. We make the choice to follow God everyday even when we can’t feel him just as we make the choice to love each other every day even when we are being complete jerks to one another.”

Our last question is, “What wisdom do you have for other couples on having a healthy marriage?”
