Engineering the Future: How to Help Your Daughter Become a STEM Pioneer

Nature schools are a growing trend in education and Microschools, and there is growing evidence that they can have a positive impact on girls’ interest in and success in science and engineering.

A study by the University of Washington found that girls who attended nature schools were more likely to be interested in pursuing careers in science or engineering than girls who did not attend nature schools. The study also found that girls who attended nature schools were more likely to have a positive attitude towards science and nature, and to be confident in their abilities in science and engineering.
For example, at Little Leaders Academy, a St. Louis Nature school, we regularly engage in STEM activities like…
Creating Permafrost
Making a Monsoon
Measuring Icebergs
Creating Simple Machines in the Middle Ages
Dissecting Owl Pellets

Another study by the University of California found that girls who attended nature schools were more likely to have a strong sense of place and environmental stewardship, and to be involved in community-based environmental initiatives. The study also found that girls who attended nature schools were more likely to develop leadership skills and self-confidence.
For example, at Little Leaders Academy, we provide learners with hands-on experiences in the natural world. This helps learners to develop a connection to the environment and to learn about the importance of environmental protection. You can see our nature mindfulness experience here.

At Little Leaders Academy in St Louis we teach learners about the importance of sustainability. This helps students to understand the impact of their actions on the environment and to learn how to make choices that are beneficial to the environment.

The Sky is the Limit: How to Give Your Daughter the Tools She Needs to Succeed in STEM

Here is some of the science behind why nature schools can be so beneficial for girls:

-Nature schools can help girls develop a love of learning.
When girls are exposed to the natural world, they are more likely to be curious and to want to learn more. This curiosity can lead to a love of learning that can benefit them in all areas of their lives.
-Nature schools can help girls develop critical thinking skills.
When girls are faced with challenges in nature, they learn how to think critically and to solve problems. These critical thinking skills can be applied to all areas of their lives, including their academic studies.
-Nature schools can help girls develop leadership skills.
When girls are in nature, they learn how to lead and to work together as a team. These leadership skills can be applied to all areas of their lives, including their academic and professional careers.
-Nature schools can help girls develop self-confidence.
When girls are in nature, they learn to trust themselves and to believe in their abilities. This self-confidence can be applied to all areas of their lives, including their academic and professional careers.

These studies suggest that nature schools can have a positive impact on girls’ academic and personal development. Nature schools can provide girls with opportunities to learn about science and nature in a hands-on way, to develop leadership skills and self-confidence, and to build a strong sense of place and environmental stewardship.
