STEM: Growing From Cuttings

Growing food cuttings with kindergarteners is a beneficial activity for a number of reasons. It can help children to learn about plants, to develop their fine motor skills, and to be more mindful of where their food comes from.

Learning about plants

When children grow food cuttings, they learn about the different parts of a plant. They learn about the roots, the stem, the leaves, and the flowers. They also learn about the different stages of plant growth. This can help them to understand how plants grow and what they need to survive.

Developing fine motor skills

Growing food cuttings requires children to use their fine motor skills. They need to use their fingers to carefully cut the cuttings and to place them in the soil. They also need to use their hands to water the cuttings and to care for them. This can help children to develop their fine motor skills, which are important for many tasks, such as writing and drawing.

Being more mindful of where their food comes from

When children grow food cuttings, they are more mindful of where their food comes from. They learn that food comes from plants, and that it takes time and care to grow food. This can help them to appreciate the food they eat and to make more sustainable choices.

Tips for growing food cuttings with kindergarteners

Here are a few tips for growing food cuttings with kindergarteners:

  • Choose a variety of cuttings. This will give children a chance to learn about different plants. Here are some other vegetables that you can produce from scraps in the kitchen: turnips, beets, bok choy, garlic, potato, carrots, and herbs.
  • Use a variety of containers. You can use pots, trays, or even egg cartons.
  • Use a well-draining potting mix.
  • Water the cuttings regularly.
  • Put the cuttings in a sunny spot.
  • Be patient. It can take several weeks or even months for cuttings to grow into plants.

With a little patience and care, you can help your kindergarteners to grow their own food cuttings. This is a fun and educational activity that can benefit children in many ways.
