Rooted in Growth: Little Leaders Academy’s New Beginning in St. Louis Forest School

Welcome to the heartwarming story of Little Leaders Academy, a place where young minds thrive in the embrace of nature and the pursuit of whole child development. In the spirit of growth and community, I’m delighted to share our journey from humble beginnings in my backyard to the exciting expansion set to unfold in 2024.

Planting the Seed: March 2020
In March 2020, as the world grappled with the onset of a global pandemic, I embarked on an unique venture – Little Leaders Academy. Opening our doors in February 2020, our first student joined the ranks in the very week that Covid was officially announced. A surreal start, yet it laid the foundation for a nurturing space where children could blossom.

Operating from my home, we initially accommodated just six spots. As a passionate advocate for alternative education and whole child development, I soon found myself turning away families due to limited capacity. The wheels of change were set in motion, leading us to contemplate a significant shift in our journey.

Roots Run Deep: The Need for Alternative Education

Over the past few years, I’ve witnessed a growing need in St. Louis for alternative schooling. Families are seeking more than just academic milestones; they yearn for a holistic approach to education that nurtures emotional, social, and intellectual growth. Traditional schools, while effective for some, fall short in meeting the diverse needs of every child.

Parents echo their struggles with traditional schools, from rigid curriculums to a lack of individualized attention. The one-size-fits-all model often leaves children overlooked, stifling their unique talents and stifling their passion for learning.

Branching Out: Announcing Our Relocation in January 2024

Recognizing this unmet need, we took a bold step forward in January 2024 – the announcement of Little Leaders Academy‘s relocation to a larger space. Our new home, nestled just four minutes from my residence and adjacent to Grant’s Farm, provides the perfect canvas for our vision.

This new space, graciously rented from Advent Episcopal, is a short walk from the picturesque Whitecliff Park. A harmonious blend of nature and community, it aligns seamlessly with our commitment to whole child development.

Building Dreams: A Custom Naturescape for Little Leaders

As we embrace this transformative journey, our vision extends beyond brick and mortar. We’re in the process of collaborating with a skilled contractor to craft a custom naturescape, a sanctuary that mirrors our values and aspirations for whole child development. This living outdoor classroom will be a haven for exploration, curiosity, and the joy of learning.

Sowing Seeds of Tomorrow: Enrolling for 2024/25 School Year and Summer Camp

The excitement doesn’t end there! Little Leaders Academy is currently enrolling for the 2024/25 school year and our 2024 Summer Camp. Our summer camp promises a delightful blend of learning and outdoor adventures, providing a sneak peek into the wonder that awaits in our school year.

Enrolling is easier than ever. Parents can effortlessly secure a spot for their little leaders by applying online. For the school year, join us for an Open House at [Link] or schedule a personalized tour to experience the warmth and inspiration of Little Leaders Academy firsthand.

New Beginnings: Starting at Advent Episcopal in Summer 2024

Our new chapter unfolds this summer at Advent Episcopal, just in time for the 2024 season. While we are renting space from Advent Episcopal, it’s important to note that Little Leaders Academy is an independent entity not affiliated with the church. We are grateful for their generosity in sharing their space, creating a haven where education meets nature.

This collaboration with Advent Episcopal allows us to expand our reach and provide an even more enriching experience for our little leaders. Starting this summer, the heart of Little Leaders Academy will beat in harmony with the natural surroundings of Advent Episcopal (near Whitecliff Park and with our new Naturescape).

What is a Naturescape? Unlocking the Wonder for Little Leaders

For parents unfamiliar with the term, a naturescape is a purposefully designed outdoor environment that serves as an extension of the classroom. It’s not just a playground; it’s a living, breathing space crafted to inspire learning, creativity, and a profound connection to nature.

A naturescape is designed to mimic the beauty and diversity of the natural world, incorporating elements such as hills, rocks, plants, and water features. It’s intentionally designed to be an immersive, multisensory experience, engaging children in open-ended play and exploration.

Purpose of Our Custom Naturescape: A Living Classroom for Exploration

Our custom naturescape at Little Leaders Academy serves a dual purpose – to immerse children in the wonders of nature and to facilitate holistic learning. Here’s a glimpse into the purpose and benefits:

Physical Development: Naturescapes encourage active play, supporting the development of gross motor skills, coordination, and physical fitness.
Emotional Well-being: Connecting with nature has proven therapeutic benefits, reducing stress, anxiety, and fostering a positive outlook on learning.
Social Skills: Outdoor environments promote collaboration, teamwork, and communication, essential skills for navigating the complexities of social interactions.
Curiosity and Creativity: Surrounded by the beauty of nature, children are inspired to ask questions, explore, and unleash their creativity in a way that traditional classrooms cannot replicate.
Environmental Stewardship: A naturescape cultivates a sense of respect and appreciation for the natural world, instilling values of sustainability and environmental stewardship from an early age.
