Ever wondered where that coffee bag came from before it was packaged? Well if you enjoy higher-end coffee it’s most likely roasted here in the United States. Have you heard of P.T’s coffee? When you hear that brand a big cartoon bubble of words like “tasty” and “unique” flavors of coffee should appear. Like I mentioned, Denny and I were blessed to get the inside scoop of what a roasting facility looks like inside.
The owner of P.T.’s Coffee was hosting a training session for the coffee shop owners in the above picture and he invited us along for the ride.
The Behind the Scenes at a Roasting Warehouse
The P.T’s office is decorated with coffee paraphernalia. The two side rooms we were shown: one was a room full of expensive coffee machines and the other was a coffee lab. The science room caught my eye. It was neat to see posters explaining the intricacies of coffee. Coffee is an art as much as beer, tea and wine.
P.T’s Coffee receives their coffee beans all over the world.
The roasting room was a small warehouse looking space with two large roasting machines. I don’t know a ton about coffee but there was an impressive roaster (the picture on the left) in there and I know this because Denny’s eyes lit up. “April take a please take a picture of that roaster.” He makes me chuckle. It was seriously Christmas for Denny during our tour.
P.T.’s coffee labels all the freshly roasted beans and stores them in buckets. During the tour we were given a tip on how to smell a burst of the beans flavors. Where the bean cracks you open that with your two thumbs and quickly smell the aroma that is released. Extra tip: you don’t have to try so hard on smelling it; it’s strong enough. This tip was learned from experience, my nostril was strangely and sweetly roasted.
Getting the opportunity to tour a roasting facility is one of the perks of being married to a man in the coffee industry. There is no excuse that a small business can’t succeed if a coffee roaster in Topeka, Kansas is making it successful. Learn the principles of a successful business and apply it. Now when you enjoy that cup of brew you can have a little more appreciation from knowing a section of the process.
Thanks for stopping by in my neck of the woods. Would love to hear from you! There are some questions below this picture.
If you are into third wave origin coffee what’s your favorite origin and/or coffee brand?
What’s the most interesting coffee cup that you have had? Mine was that chocolate coffee strawberry cup.
